Robert McEntarffer | Professional Service - October 2025
I'm helping Crete High School with a project their administration and staff are working on: ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science staff are all working on creating common assessments that they will all use to check in about student knowledge/skills at the beginning and end of courses (or specific units within courses). I did a presentation earlier in the year about classroom assessment research and principles. On Oct. 13, I visited the groups again to help them use those principles to start creating their own common assessments. The goal at Crete High School is for each department to have a series of common assessments that all staff will use and analyze the resulting assessment data to make teaching choices as their students move on to other classes in their subject area (and the data will help teachers change their pacing charts and curriculum materials/lesson plans to help alleviate misconceptions and work on tricky concepts).

These watercolors are in Mary Doane's copy of the Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States (1867). This book is very fragile, so scanning the pages allows the watercolors to be preserved and accessible. The grant provided funding for supplies to organize and protect the book as well. This project completes the digital preservation of Mary Doane's botanical watercolors in the Doane University Archives.

Measuring the ethical reasoning of engineering students, despite its importance to the profession and accreditation requirements, remains a challenge for many undergraduate programs. Incorporation of standardized instruments into program assessment is considered advantageous due to their reliability, validity, and ease of implementation. The well established Defining Issues Test (DIT2) is one such instrument with generalized moral dilemmas applicable to all, whereas the similarly structured Engineering Ethical Reasoning Instrument (EERI) provides discipline relevant scenarios to specifically probe the ethical understanding of engineers. Using a pre/postintervention methodology, both tests were administered in a semester-long, integrated design/ethics engineering course to facilitate direct comparisons by using the same set of respondents. The pre and post testing results for each test were analyzed using a pairwise, two tailed t-test for statistical significance. More pronounced differences were observed in the N2-scores and with the EERI for the engineering-specific course. Comparison between the two instruments indicated a positive, and hence somewhat transferable, relationship between the generic and specific instruments. The utility of both instruments for short-term interventional and longitudinal programmatic assessment is discussed.
Joel TerMaat - Kristopher Williams - Chris Wentworth | Presentation - September 2023
Joel TerMaat, Kristopher Williams, and Christopher Wentworth presented their paper "A cross-sectional study of undergraduates’ ethical reasoning skills at a liberal arts institution" at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) 2023 Midwest Section Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska. The study was supported by the Walt Olsen Endowment for Faculty Development.
A cross-sectional study of undergraduates’ ethical reasoning skills at a liberal arts institution
Liberal arts institutions, given their inherent purpose, are arguably well-positioned to promote the ethical development of science and engineering students. When assessed using the Defining Issues Test (DIT2) corresponding to the Neo-Kohlbergian model of moral development, other researchers have typically observed dramatic gains during college, particularly pronounced at liberal arts institutional types. A cross-sectional DIT2 study sampling across the residential student population was conducted to investigate the localized and modern impact at the home liberal arts institution. Other considerations due to gender, political identification, retention mortality, and major/division are discussed.

Phil Weitl | Presentation - October 2022
In October, Professor Weitl will attend The Examined Life Conference at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine, where he has delivered lectures or workshops each year since 2015. This annual narrative medicine conference brings together health care professionals, artists, and university educators from around the country to explore the intersection of the Humanities and medicine for artists, writers, caregivers, teachers, and students. This year, Professor Weitl will lead a narrative medicine workshop called "In Plain Sight: Sleight of Hand and Misdirection in Personal Narrative." In the acclaimed Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, adapted from the 1959 novel by Shirley Jackson, the character of Steven Crain remarks, “A ghost can be a lot of things: a memory, a daydream, a secret, grief, anger, guilt. In my experience, most times a ghost is a wish.” Gothic horror does this well: the struggle of humanity against unnatural forces, set in a bleak and inescapable place, allows what we dare not say to hide in plain sight, camouflaged in monstrous form. Nonfiction writers do not have the luxury of such disguise, or do we? In his introduction to The Art of the Personal Essay, a sweeping anthology of creative nonfiction, Phillip Lopate writes, “The spectacle of baring the naked soul is meant to awaken the sympathy of the reader, who is apt to forgive the essayist’s self-absorption in return for the warmth of his or her candor.” But vulnerability can have consequences, especially for artists and writers today who double as caregivers and teachers bound by HIPAA, mandatory reporter duties, and our own ethical standards of privacy and discretion. The specter of these concerns is powerful and real, but so too is the instinct to seek meaning in the pain and poignance of contemporary life, thus shedding light upon the nightmares from which we never wake. How might we balance these seemingly incongruous demands? This workshop will examine practical techniques, drawn from literature, film, and the courageous efforts of his own students who found safe but healing ways to write discreetly about the most dangerous and delicate parts of their lives.

Brad Elder | Teaching
Dr. Brad Elder was asked by The Nature Conservancy, government agencies of Canada as well as property owners and NGOs to hold fire workshop in Canada this coming fall.
Dr. Brad Elder helps to provide hands-on leadership training in fire and emergency healthcare situations. Crete Fire allows me the opportunity to provide real world learning and leadership experiences. I teach new students every weekend in class and on the job when on calls. It is all volunteer and the learning comes from all quarters. The Cool Background: Crete Volunteer Fire Department has 6 current and 8 former Doane students as well as 2 faculty members. We have recruited Doane students for more than 15 years because it gives our students real learning opportunities, real leadership skills and real on the job experiences. Their experiences here have been cited as reasons for getting the bump into med school and other health programs. Our students regularly save lives, save homes, help people in need and even deliver babies. They learn about healthcare from the emergency side and experience real wins and real losses. It teaches them to be team players leveraging each other’s skills and weaknesses to get a job done. Here is a video of our students in action (The video was made by one of the fire fighters for his own webpage and has no ties to Doane, but it shows our students learning on the job, giving back to the community and being leaders.) Our current and former students often make up the whole team on ambulances and fire trucks. Or students take scene command on car accidents, fires, and medical calls including cardiac arrests. We build leaders.

Brad Elder | Professional Service
Dr. Brad Elder Helped burn approximately 1,500 acres in Kansas and Nebraska this spring (typically it is 5,000 and last year was over 8,000 acres). Background: My direct teaching goal is to help teach landowners and habitat managers how to maintain their native prairies. The goal is habitat restoration and maintenance. Our Ecosystems/environments need scientists to help conserve and maintain them in the face of human impacts. Not only are we looking to preserve species and ecosystems, but we also must do it safely and minimize impact to the community particularly in the form of smoke. This probably falls under teaching and professional service.
Dr. Brad Elder - Volunteer fire fighter EMT. This is a little different in terms of service. It is service to our community. For privacy I will not list anything that happened this month. Over the last few years, I have been directly part of a team that has delivered one baby, brought 3 people back from the dead, saved about 5 homes from fire and responded to more than 1,000 calls.

Brad Elder | Grant
Dr. Brad Elder’s work on making mosquito nets from plastic shopping bags is currently being tested by Habitat for Humanity in southern Kenya. It is designed to provide whole homes protection against mosquitos at nearly no cost. This is the last stage in a $20,000 award for malaria reduction through home construction sponsored by Habitat for Humanity.
Dr. Brad Elder was awarded two Doane funded student research positions for the summer. We will be researching a way to make homes invisible to mosquitoes. Background: Mosquitoes hunt by using CO2. There are ways to vent homes cheaply and possibly for free so that the CO2 in the house is vented 10 to 15 feet above the house. If this works, we can make homes invisible to mosquitos. I will be working with juniors Cierra Meyer and Jaelynn Scott.

Kim Jarvis | Grant
In 2020, Dr. Kim Jarvis and former library director Melissa Gomis were awarded a CIC Humanities Research for the Public Good grant, funded by the Council of Independent Colleges and the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. The project is titled "The Flora of the Nebraska Tallgrass Prairie: Past and Present," and is a partnership with the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center.
Due to the pandemic, the grant activities were postponed to the 2021-2022 academic year. In that time period, Cali Biaggi stepped in as the collections expert for the grant. The project utilizes two archival collections from the Doane Perkins Library and Archives: the Mary Doane watercolors and materials related to Goodwin Swezey and the Doane Herbarium. These collections along with Spring Creek Prairie’s continued conservation efforts have offered students a unique opportunity to compare the flora of the eastern Nebraska prairie during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with the flora of the twenty-first-century prairie. The project examines what observers of flora saw in the early years of white settlement and development of the landscape and what is present today.
An exhibit opening to showcase student research and the collections will be held on Sunday, April 3 from 12:30 to 3:00 at Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center. The exhibit will be up through the month of April.
