2025 Interterm Session

Open Learning Academy’s interterm is a unique opportunity to accelerate your learning in a condensed time frame. OLA’s 5-week interterm will allow you to take advantage of your time off to earn credits without the pressure of your regular course load, making it easier to grasp complex topics.

Interterm courses are designed with the flexibility needed during winter break with guided deadlines to ensure you manage your time effectively through the 8-module course design. Digital textbooks and lab manuals are integrated into your course, lab kits are required to purchase for Chemistry courses with labs. Lab kits will be available to purchase through your Canvas course.

Interterm Structure

Students will have specific modules to complete each week, including readings, discussion posts, and assignments. To stay on track and ensure successful completion of the course, assignments will have two types of deadlines:

  • Guided Due Dates: : These recommended deadlines play a crucial role in managing your time effectively and keeping up with the fast pace of the course. Staying on track with these due dates is a key factor for comprehension and overall success.
  • Hard Due Date: January 23rd is the final deadline by which all work must be submitted. Assignments not turned in by the hard deadline will have a direct impact on your final grade, as they will be penalized or given zero credit.
Interterm schedule:

  • December 21st: Last day to Enroll in Interterm
  • December 22nd: First day of Interterm Courses 
  • December 29th: Last day to drop with 100% refund
  • January 2nd: Last day to withdraw with a 40% refund and a “W”
  • January 9th: Last day to withdraw with a “W”
  • January 23rd: Interterm ends all coursework is due
  • January 30th: Grades Due & Posted

This Biology course online will introduce students to the concepts and connections between evolution and ecology and includes an online lab component. Students will learn how populations evolve, including what factors are necessary for the process of evolution to occur, and how evolution accounts for both the diversity and similarity among all forms of life on Earth (with a focus on vertebrates). Students will use this information to understand the association between how life on Earth has evolved and how animal form (or structure) relates to function. Finally, by learning about the different types of environments on Earth, students will understand how organisms, populations, and communities, are affected by the dynamics of their surroundings (i.e., the ecosystem), and the importance of conserving the diverse forms of life on Earth.

The online genetics course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the principles of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genetics. The Zoology online course offers a survey of the animal kingdom and animal-like protists from an evolutionary perspective. A calculus-based online physics course is an introduction to physics. Topics covered include kinematics, dynamics, work, energy, rotational mechanics, and fluids. Students will gain conceptual understanding of the topics covered and ability to use quantitative methods, including calculus, to model physical phenomena. This online physics course includes laboratory work.

Labs fall into three categories: at-home labs, laboratory kits and virtual labs. At-home labs use commonly found household items or things that can easily be purchased and come with a set of instructions on how to complete the lab. Laboratory kits are used in this course and are very similar to at home-labs - items and directions required to complete the lab are sent directly to you via the purchase of a lab kit. Virtual labs are also used in this course and use designed simulations which walk you through any experiment and will ask you lab-related questions. Hands-on labs may require a video of you performing the lab and/or a completed lab report.

How many courses can I enroll in during interterm?
You are strongly advised to only enroll in one course during interterm. Students will not be permitted to enroll in more than two courses, due to the fast paced nature of the courses.
