Students interested in Immunology prior to August 2026 should look to BIO-344 Immunology for Health Professions.
This course will teach students about the complex components and dynamics of the human immune system and how this complex system is responsible for protecting individuals from disease and damage. The course will cover essential concepts in immunology including pattern recognition, clonal selection theory and central tolerance. Major topics covered in this course include: the cellular and protein components of the innate arm of the immune system, the development and function of adaptive immune system through discussion of B cells and antibodies as well as T cells and cytokines, and important anatomical structures associated with immunity. Students will learn about major pathologies associated with the immune system including hypersensitivity and allergy, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency and cancers of the immune system. Finally, essential immunological techniques used in both in a clinical setting and in the lab will be covered through multiple perspectives. Students in this course will gain an understanding of the complexity and necessary balance of components of the immune system and the implications this has on human health and infectious disease progression.
Note: Knowledge of Biology I & II or equivalent is recommended to be successful in this course.
