Teacher Education Assistance for College Higher Education Grant (TEACH)

Maximum Award: up to $3,752/yr

Eligibility

The TEACH Grant is available to students who:

1)  Have the intent to be certified and teach in a high-need field. Federal shortage needs are defined below:

   • Mathematics
   • Science
   • Foreign Language
   • English as a Second Language (ESL)
   • Reading Specialist
   • Special Education

A list of high-need fields by state.
2) Agree to teach a minimum of 4 years (within 8 years of completing your degree) as a full-time teacher at a low-income school.

Federal student aid grant is based on financial need and several other factors. To determine your need level, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Undergraduate Eligibility Requirements

  1. Have the intent to teach in a high-need field.
  2. Be in good standing with the Title IV federal aid programs.
  3. Scored above the 75th percentile in one sub-test of their ACT or SAT submitted to Doane University OR have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 after one full-time semester at Doane University’s Crete Campus.
  4. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 at Doane University if qualified by GPA.
  5. Maintain satisfactory academic progress standards for Title IV aid recipients as determined by the institution.
  6. Transfer students may qualify by ACT OR have completed a minimum of 12 semester credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 at their previous institution. A transfer student interested in TEACH but who doesn’t qualify by ACT or transfer GPA, can qualify after completing a full time semester at Doane University and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Graduate Eligibility Requirements

  1. Enrolled in the Curriculum and Instruction Program.
  2. In good standing with the Title IV federal aid programs.
  3. Have scored above the 75th percentile in one sub-test of their GRE or other graduate entrance exam submitted to Doane University OR have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 in their under-graduate program where the student received their bachelor’s degree.
  4. Maintain satisfactory academic progress standards for Title IV aid recipients as determined by the institution.
  5. Transfer students will need to have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.25 from their last institution attended (minimum of 6 graduate credits). A transfer student interested in TEACH but who doesn’t qualify by entrance exam or transfer GPA, can qualify after completing a full-time semester at Doane University and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
  6. Maintain a minimum GPA of a 3.25 if qualified by GPA.

Fast Track (Accelerated Certification) students

  1. Certification must be in an area of high need.
  2. In good standing with the Title IV federal aid programs.
  3. Have scored above the 75th percentile in one sub-test of their GRE or other graduate entrance exam submitted to Doane University OR have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 in their undergraduate program where the student received their bachelor’s degree.
  4. Have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 upon completion of bachelor’s degree.
  5. If student is required to complete undergraduate classes prior to beginning the Accelerated certification program, the student must have a 3.25 GPA in those classes.
  6. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 if qualified by GPA.

All federal grants are credited to the student's account after census day. Generally, they are applied equally over each term of enrollment, depending upon enrollment status and eligibility. 

Grants are first applied to:

  • tuition
  • fees
  • room and board (if living on campus)

And then:

  • books
  • supplies

If a credit remains, the student may use the grant funds to pay for other educational expenses.

Renewability & Repayment

2 full-time semesters or 4 full-time terms per academic year

Undergraduate students in the School of Graduate and Professional Studies receive federal grants for 4 full-time terms per academic year. Additional terms required to complete a degree are not covered under federal grants.

IMPORTANT CONDITION
If the student fails to complete the requirements associated with the receipt of this grant, the TEACH Grant will turn into an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan that must then be repaid. The requirements are outlined in detail when completing the TEACH counseling and Agreement to Serve.

Scholarship Process

Please contact the Financial Aid Office prior to applying for the TEACH Grant to determine if you qualify for the TEACH grant by your ACT percentile score or current Doane GPA.

Apply for the FAFSA, then complete TEACH Grant Counseling and Agreement to Serve (ATS) here.

To receive the TEACH Grant, the student must complete the following each year they wish to receive the award:

   1. File a FAFSA.
   2. Graduate students must complete the Lincoln Campus Financial Aid Application for MEd students.
   3. Complete TEACH Grant Counseling and the Agreement to Serve (ATS) on the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
   4. Notify Doane's Financial Aid Office once you have completed the ATS and TEACH counseling.
