Personal Background:
Spencer has lived in Nebraska throughout his life but has always sought out new experiences, stories, and cultures to share with others. He was fortunate to have parents who, despite living in a remote area, had traveled the world and accumulated an incredible music collection. Naturally curious and with a love for collecting, Spencer’s interests evolved from bugs to sports cards and eventually to music. He pursued a broad array of interests, taking every class possible and participating in sports, clubs, and productions, which provided opportunities to explore Nebraska and beyond.
Spencer's next chapter brought him to Lincoln and Nebraska Wesleyan University. Initially feeling somewhat lost, he found his footing in digital art, photography, and cultural studies while immersing himself in Lincoln's vibrant music scene. He DJed house parties and attended as many live concerts as he could afford. Using his degree, Spencer began covering shows for local journalism outlets and booking events for Box Awesome, which later evolved into the Bourbon Theatre. After six years helping the Bourbon grow, he ventured out independently, co-founding multifaceted festivals such as Lincoln Calling, Lincoln Exposed, the Nebraska Folk and Roots Festival, and Hub and Soul. He also curated and produced Jazz in June for five years, booking the series’ first two Grammy Award winners.
As a DJ, Spencer has performed in six different states, hosted multiple residencies, and won a 2017 Omaha Entertainment Award. Under his leadership, Lincoln Calling grew from a DIY local festival to a nationally recognized non-profit incorporating arts and education programs alongside music. In 2023, after taking on a new role, he helped transition the festival's management to the Lincoln Arts Council.
Spencer also buys and sells records through Spindle Records and DJs under the name $pencelove, hosting monthly events at O’Rourke’s in Lincoln. Dancing with friends, which he deeply missed during the pandemic, remains a passion he now cherishes more than ever. He continues to keep Lincoln's streets alive through Hub and Soul.
Additionally, Spencer produces interviews and exclusive content for his KZUM radio show, The Point of Departure, which blends modern jazz and R&B with global and spiritual influences. The show airs on 89.3FM and KZUM.org.
A few unique details about Spencer include his upbringing on a ranch where he broke Arabian horses alongside his father and grandfather, often riding through the badlands and Pine Ridge to collect 30-million-year-old pre-evolutionary mammal fossils. He also owns over 5,000 records and has a turntable on each floor of his three-story house. If given five minutes to prepare an hour-long lecture, he would speak passionately about the influence of 1960s and 1970s independent Black jazz labels and musicians on the music industry and the civil rights movement.
